Threads and Affiliate Marketing: Is There Real Potential?

Become an Affiliate

Social media platforms come and go, but if you want to make the most out of your campaigns, you need to always be on top of any trending platform that you can find. Two years ago, Meta announced that they would be competing with Twitter /X, and they launched their new platform, Threads.

At first, it was an incredible success; the platform was marketed as the “Twitter/X killer” and in the first few months, they already had over 300 million users. We discovered that these users weren't as active on Threads as you might expect, as most of the users got their accounts with their Instagram accounts, and they barely even touched the app. With time, though, Threads has managed to create its own community, and now it's a popular alternative to X.

Now, with all of that time and two years of data and user behavior, we can finally answer the question of whether Threads is a place affiliates can make money at in 2025!

What Exactly Is Threads and What Is It Like in 2025?

At its base, it's something similar to X (Twitter). It's a text-centric social app that has short posts that can include images or videos. It is tied to Instagram, and the apps are cross-compatible, and accounts are linked together.

Luckily for the platform, it isn't just a stripped-down version of its older competitor. It has a set of unique and robust features that set it apart in some ways.

  • A Functional Desktop Experience

While Threads is a mobile-first app, they have developed their desktop platform as well. This makes it viable for users who use computers and laptops, and especially good for all of the affiliates who enjoy using special tools and add-ons to gain advantages.

  • Robust Search and Hashtags

On Threads, you can properly search for topics and follow hashtags. You can also set up chronological feeds, and for now the feeds are way more organic which give you better indication to what people resond to. Its also much easier to interact with communities with specific interests due to this.

  • Trending Topics

Similar to X, you can also find real-time info about which topics are currently trending and what people are discussing the most. With this, you can tap into relevant and high-visibility conversations.

  • Instagram Connection

Since Meta made Threads an extension of Instagram, this seamless integration works perfectly. It allows for easy cross-promotion as well as audience building between a visual platform (Instagram) and a conversational one (Threads).

  • Monetization Tools

While the ad platform is still not as sophisticated as the main Meta one (there is integration, though), early versions of their ads are showing great results with boosted posts and basic targeting options. Since this is Meta, we will likely see a huge focus on this in the future.

The Affiliate Potential: Where's the Opportunity?

So, the platform has a user base, it has content, it has potential, but is it a good fit for affiliates? In short, yes, and it's gonna be even better with time!

  • Direct, Clickable links

This is the biggest advantage, unlike on Instagram or other platforms, where you can have one CTA button, on Threads, you can have multiple clickable links that link to different things. Making it more direct and optimized for the audience.

  • High Engagement in Niche Communities

Since the platform revolves around conversations and communities, it's not that hard to get engaged with specific posts and audiences.  Once you have some authority over the subjects, you can see incredible benefits from interacting with your audience there.

  • A funnel from Instagram

Since the two platforms are so well connected, you can use your IG account to warm up your audience and direct them to your Threads account, where you can sell them what you have to offer and optimize for conversions. We all know how limiting “link in bio” is on Instagram; here, you won’t have those issues!

  • Lower Content Saturation

Competition is always hard, and finding places where your competition isn’t is always beneficial. The barrier to entry is still low, and even without much effort, you can gain a relatively large following.

How to Actually Do Affiliate Marketing on Threads

So, we talked about all the basics, it's time to get to some more actionable strategies you can implement. The main thing about this social media platform is that it rewards value and conversations over aggressive sales tactics. This means that you should change your approach to fit that!

  • Build Authority

If you treat your profile as just a wall of affiliate links, you will fail. On this platform, users mute and block spammy accounts quickly, and if you don’t catch their interest right away, you will not get a second chance. This is why building authority is key.

You should start spending 80% of your time just providing good and valuable content to your niche. Share insights, ask questions, comment, and build up a reputation for being knowledgeable and reputable. After you have gained some followers, you can slowly introduce your promotions, but even then, do them sparingly.

  • Value Post + Link Reply

Another way you can avoid looking like you're spamming links all the time is through this strategy.

The strategy is simple: you create a high-value initial post, let’s say “Top 5 Tips for X”, “What are your top tools for Y”, or do a mini-review of a product.

Then reply to your own post with your recommendations and affiliate link. This way, you frame it as a helpful follow-up instead of a promotion or ad.

  • Micro Review Threads

Threads can be great for making multi-post stories that cover the same topic in more detail. It's more engaging than a single block of text, and the way the platform works, it promotes your content more if people actually go through multiple posts to learn the entire story. Here is an example:

  • Post 1: “I’ve been struggling with [Problem] and I needed a solution that was [Requirement 1] and [Requirement 2]”

  • Post 2: “I decided to test out [Product Name] and here is my unboxing and first impressions…”

  • Post 3: “After a week of use, the standout feature is definitely [Feature], as it helped solve my [Problem], but there were some issues with [Issue] that I could overcome.”

  • Post 4: ”Final verdict: it's a solid investment for anyone serious about [Niche]. I recommend you check it out and see for yourself if it can help you [Affiliate link].”

This is a very basic approach and example, but you get the point.

  • Cross Platform

Threads and Instagram are connected, so use that to your advantage!

You can cross-promote your Threads account on Instagram stories and Reels, and link your audience to a place where you can learn more and find more info. You can also do things like to tease things on IG, and then follow up with “Want my full review? I just posted it on Threads!” etc.

Challenges and Limitations

Let’s be realistic, even with everything we covered, Threads is not the perfect platform for affiliates, and it has significant challenges.

  • The Ad Platform is Immature

As of mid 2025, the advertising tools are still basic. You cant run complex campaigns with detailed targeting and optimization like on other platforms.

  • The Algorithm is a Black Box

The alfo is still unpredicatable. What works one week might not the next week as Meta is still tuning it. This is common for newer platforms, and with time it should get better.

  • User Intent is Conversational, Not Commercial

This is probably the biggest issue. Threads is a place where people talk and usually they don’t buy things. Once users are on the platform they just have a different mindset which makes it hard to get them to convert. This is why you need to build authority and find a audience before you start pushing for products and services.

  • Attribution Can Be Tricky

Something that is not often mentioned, but tracking can be tricky. You should use UTM parameters on your links, as tracking the full value of your Threads activity can be difficult. There is no real metric for measuring the authority you are building, and whether it leads to conversions three weeks later. So keep that in mind.

Conclusion

After two years of Threads, it's safe to say that YES, the platform has potential for affiliate marketers, but only if you play the long game.

The platform has its own audience and communities that don’t respond well to immediate ads and conversions, they require a longer and more deliberate approach. If you wan to get sales right away, there are other platforms, but on Threads you need to build an audience and community around your brand first.

The potential for success is real, but you need to be patient, forward-looking, and consistent to reach success.
